Where Does Artreestry Marble Come From? The Journey from Pakistan to Your Home
When you hold an Artreestry piece, you are holding something that has travelled a long way to reach you — not just geographically, but through thousands of years of geological formation and generations of artisan knowledge.
Here is the full story of where Artreestry marble comes from, who crafts it, and what that journey means for the quality and character of every piece we make.
Pakistan: One of the World's Great Marble Regions
Pakistan is home to some of the most extraordinary marble and onyx deposits on earth. The country's marble industry is centred primarily in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, where geological conditions have produced an exceptional variety of natural stones over millions of years.
Pakistani marble and onyx is prized internationally for its quality, variety and depth of colour. The green onyx found in Pakistan's quarries — the same stone used in Artreestry's most popular products — is among the finest quality green onyx available anywhere in the world. Fossil coral marble, black marble, white marble and multi-colour onyx are also quarried here in exceptional grades.
This is not a coincidence or a supply chain shortcut. It is the reason Artreestry can offer 23 distinct marble varieties at quality levels that simply are not accessible when sourcing from other regions.
From Quarry to Workshop
The journey of each Artreestry piece begins when raw stone is extracted from the quarry in large blocks. These blocks are transported to the artisan workshops where our team works. First, raw blocks are cut into manageable slabs. Then individual pieces are cut, shaped and roughed out into their basic forms — chess pieces, mortar bowls, pen holders, coasters, trays. This initial shaping uses precision machinery to achieve consistent dimensions, but the real skill comes next.
The Hand-Carving and Finishing Process
Every Artreestry piece is finished by hand. Our artisans have typically spent years learning their craft — understanding how different marble varieties respond to tools, how veining affects structural integrity, and how to bring out the natural beauty of each stone through progressive polishing.
The finishing process for a single chess piece involves multiple stages: rough shaping, profile grinding, detail carving, progressive sanding through increasingly fine grits, and finally hand-polishing to achieve the smooth, lustrous surface that makes marble feel so extraordinary to hold.
A complete 32-piece marble chess set represents an extraordinary amount of skilled artisan labour. Each of the 32 pieces is individually shaped and polished. No two are ever identical — the veining pattern on every single piece is unique to that stone.
Why Handmade Matters
There are machine-made marble products on the market. They are generally cheaper and more consistent — and considerably less interesting. When marble is shaped purely by machine, the result is technically correct but lacks the character and variation that comes from human craftsmanship.
Handmade marble pieces have subtle variations in surface texture, veining expression and finish that make each one genuinely individual. Our artisans work with each piece of stone rather than imposing a uniform template onto it. The result is homeware that has character, not just specification.
Quality Control Before Shipping
Every finished piece goes through quality inspection before packaging. We check for surface consistency, correct dimensions, finish quality and structural integrity. Pieces that do not meet our standards are not shipped.
Each order is then packaged carefully for international shipping. Marble is heavy and requires proper cushioning to arrive safely. Our packaging is designed to protect pieces reliably across long-haul shipping to the USA, Australia and international destinations.
What This Means for You
When you buy from Artreestry, you are not buying a mass-produced product assembled from standardised components. You are buying a piece that was carved from a specific piece of stone by a specific person, finished by hand, and sent directly to you.
The veining on your piece exists nowhere else in the world. The colour depth, the surface texture, the way light catches the polished marble — these are all unique to the stone from which your product was carved. That is what handmade natural marble means. And it is why, once people own an Artreestry piece, they almost always come back for more.
