What Is Travertine? How It Differs From Marble and Why It Makes Beautiful Homeware

Travertine and marble are often grouped together in the world of natural stone — and they do share some visual characteristics — but they are geologically distinct materials with different visual personalities. Here's what you need to know.

What Is Travertine?

Travertine is a form of limestone that forms at hot springs and around geothermal vents. As hot, mineral-rich water rises to the surface, calcium carbonate deposits build up in layers over time. This layering process is what gives travertine its distinctive banded, cream-and-beige appearance. Unlike marble — which is formed under pressure and heat deep underground — travertine forms near the surface through mineral precipitation.

The result is a stone that is visually warmer, more textured, and more organic-looking than most marbles. Travertine typically ranges from pale cream to warm honey to amber, with subtle horizontal banding and, in some varieties, small natural pores (gaps where gas bubbles formed during deposition).

Travertine vs Marble: Key Differences

Formation: Marble forms from limestone under extreme heat and pressure (metamorphic process). Travertine forms from mineral-rich water depositing calcium carbonate near the surface (sedimentary process).

Appearance: Marble typically has flowing, irregular veining. Travertine has more linear, horizontal banding and a warmer, creamier palette. Travertine rarely has the dramatic dark veining of some marble types.

Texture: High-quality travertine (like that used in Artreestry products) is fully filled and polished, giving it a smooth surface. Lower-quality travertine may retain natural pores.

Hardness: Both are calcium carbonate stones of similar hardness (approximately 3 on the Mohs scale). Both require the same care: no acidic cleaners, no abrasive contact.

Why Travertine Works for Homeware

Travertine's warm, earthy character makes it especially suited to homeware contexts where you want natural stone without the high contrast of black and white or the drama of green onyx. Key characteristics that make it exceptional:

Warmth: The cream-to-honey tones of travertine work with almost every warm interior palette — wood, linen, leather, terracotta. It looks as natural on a farmhouse kitchen counter as on a contemporary marble shelf.

Subtlety: Travertine reads as understated luxury — you know it's natural stone, but it doesn't announce itself the way darker or more colourful stones do. It's the stone for people who prefer their luxury quiet.

Versatility: Travertine pairs beautifully with most other stone types. Travertine & White is a soft, warm chess combination. Travertine & Green Onyx is a sophisticated earthy-luxe pairing. Travertine coasters complement any colour of marble barware.

Travertine in the Artreestry Collection

Travertine appears across multiple Artreestry categories: chess sets (Travertine & White, Travertine & Black, Travertine & Green Onyx), peg solitaire boards, coasters, serving trays, cloud-shaped trays, butter keepers, hot pot trivets, and more. The warm, organic character of travertine makes it one of the most versatile stones in our collection — it fits naturally alongside everything from dark-toned barware to light-coloured kitchen accessories.

Artreestry's travertine is fully filled (no open pores) and polished to a smooth, consistent finish. Like all our natural stone, it is 100% genuine travertine — no resin, no composites.
